Snuff - Book Review

Snuff by Terry Pratchett
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.

And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe. There are many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder.
He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches, and occasionally snookered and out of his mind, but never out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment.
They say that in the end all sins are forgiven.
But not quite all...
Everybody knows that Terry Pratchett writes funny books - that's just part of modern English folklore. But it needs to be pointed out that they also contain real and deep profundities that ought to move you.

Get past the fact that his characters are frequently not as highly-dimensioned as your average human being - but no less-dimensioned than your average cartoon character. Get past the fact that the plots and morals are painted in the broadest brush-strokes and the simplest colours. Get past the fact that the tropes being used border on the clicheed. These are just the templates that Terry Pratchett uses in order to semaphore his message. And it needs to be said that his novels are not-so-heavily-disguised morality plays.

It has often been said that the purpose of fiction is not to preach a message, but to entertain. However, it may be suggested that TP is allowed to do both. The morals are obvious, the characters are transparent and the plot is to a certain extent predictable. What is far from predictable is the path he uses to get there, or the scenery (physical and moral) that you see on the way.

Without giving any more away than has already been divulged, the book reads as a metaphor for the socio-political climate of Britain in the early nineteenth century. As such, the "morphic resonances" are closer to the surface than they are in many of his other novels, and the usual jokes and parodies abound as usual. However, you have to wait till the last page to find out why the family of five eligible spinsters with no penny to their name have the surname "Gordon" (and probably have to know British English to get the joke). Subtler is the discussion (in an apple orchard) of the philosopher from a couple of centuries earlier, who is referred to as "Woolsthorpe". Even more subtle is the fact that the name of the tobacconist who acts as the key into the tobacco smuggling racket has the first name "Wilberforce".

Many of the usual Watch characters have bit parts, but this is mainly Sam, Sibyl, Young Sam and, sharing the stage with Sam on more-or-less equal billing, the delightful Willikins. All of this comes together to create a real gem and a great addition to discworld series. A right rollicking 5 stars from me for this brilliant book.

Forge World Newsletter #285 - Dark Eldar Tantalus & Imperial Emplacement Released

As always the important bits reproduced below:

===============================================

Hi there, We have two new exciting releases to announce, the mighty Dark Eldar Tantalus and the Imperial Emplacement hollow resin terrain piece.

Dark Eldar Tantalus
First crafted, so it is said, for the Archon Surasis Grief of the Kabal of the Dark Mirror, the Tantalus is an assault skimmer, somewhat larger and more complex in design than the Raider, and accordingly better armed. Its distinctive twin-hulled design houses powerful engine-reactors slaved to enhanced drives and its unique scythevane armament.
One of the largest Dark Eldar vehicles yet encountered by the Imperial war machine, the cruel reavers who crew this sleek engine of destruction take delight in mounting high-speed attacks, slicing through the hulls of enemy vehicles and rending infantry into crimson shreds, heralded by the screech of the molecular dissonance fields of its scythevanes and the rapid fire of its pulse-disintegrator armament.
The Dark Eldar Tantalus, designed by Daren Parrwood, is a detailed full resin kit that includes a set of etched brass deck panels. Measuring nearly 11” from prow to stern, this twin-hulled vehicle is a great addition to any Dark Eldar army. With its full rules contained Imperial Armour Apocalypse Second Edition, the Tantalus is available now for immediate release.

Imperial Emplacement
Adding to our new range of hollow resin scenery is the Imperial Emplacement, designed by Blake Spence.

This detailed free-standing terrain piece has been designed as a dug-in position for almost any size of Warhammer 40,000 vehicle, from Chimeras and Leman Russ to Macharius and Malcador-based super heavy tanks. The Imperial Emplacement features a wealth of detail such as ammunition stowage, unexploded munitions, a targeting cogitator and an observer’s position. The base of the Imperial Emplacement has been reinforced with trench plates to act as duckboards, and the scenery piece also features plenty of space for crew models as well as vehicles.
Ideal for use as both a gaming piece to fight battles over or the basis of a detailed diorama, the Imperial Emplacement is available to order now for immediate despatch.

Like the tantalus and the emplacement, pleasantly suprised the emplacement is only £22, may well consider one depending on how my own conversions of something similar turn out.

Forgeworld Sneak Peeks - Imperial Armour 2nd Ed New Imperial Guard Tanks

Hi Folks,
I'll keep this short as I'm sure you are pretty curious as to what I've found! Basically my IA:A 2nd Ed arrived on Saturday and thumbing threw the pages i came across two new tanks for the guard that are coming up. Below are some pics and hints and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Suffice to say in IA:A 2nd Ed there isn't much new other then some chapter specific variations of the Contemptor for BA and SW, everything else is pretty much replacing old stuff but if you want to know anything just let me know.

The first we have all see is the Macharius Omega, the pic from the book is here:

But as everyone knows this has already featured on the blog so here is a picture of the model we have seen for this:

Next up we have the Crassus Dominus, this is an awesome bit of kit as show by the outline below:

this thing is Hench!!!! it combines one of these:

with three! yes that's right three of these:
Oh yeah and did i mention it can move and fire everything? I think shy of the semi-confirmed Plastic Hydra (my local store manager basically said its on its way and hes not been wrong so far with releases) this has to now be my most wanted tank :)

any thoughts or questions chaps and chapesses?

Forge World and Warhammer Forge Studio

The ever-popular Forge World Studio area will have even more amazing displays, artwork, concept sketches and work-in-progress projects for you to admire at this year’s Games Day - our entire design team will be on hand, split across three areas, allowing you better access to talk to our talented designers and to see some amazing, as yet unseen miniatures. The Studio team have also been hard at work creating a totally new display board for this year’s Games Day, showcasing part of the Eldar assault upon Betalis III that will be detailed in the forthcoming Imperial Armour Volume 11: The Doom of Mymeara.
On the subject of books, jaw-droppingly detailed models are only one half of the Forge World range. We also have a dedicated Book Design team who are responsible for the colour profiles, layout, artwork, photographic art, star maps, page textures – everything that makes an Imperial Armour or Warhammer Forge book the masterpiece it is. Graphic Artists Ian Strickland, Rhys Pugh, Kenton Mills and Sam Lamont will be showcasing their work and explaining exactly what goes into laying out a book, and they may even have their high-tech cogitators with them so you can see this work in action. The chance to see a piece of artwork being worked on ‘live’ cannot be missed!

Looking at those the book is pre-ordered already and I'm very tempted by the emplacement but unless I'm doing a diorama I cant justify it till I get a table :)

Forge World Newsflash - Space Marine Games Day releases + Fantasy Book!

As always the important bits reproduced below:
===============================================
Hi there, With Games Day UK only three days away, we’ve got three more exclusive pre-release items to announce today. As with the other exclusive releases we’ve revealed in the last few days, these will be on sale at Games Day UK in limited numbers. So without further ado…

Tamurkhan: Throne of Chaos on sale at Games Day UK
The first of our exclusive Games Day UK pre-releases is the eagerly awaited Warhammer Forge expansion book, Tamurkhan: Throne of Chaos.
This book retells the brutal conquests and bloody battles of the Chaos Warlord Tamurkhan and his horde in their quest to attain the favour of the Dark Gods. In this 208 page, full-colour, hardback book you will find: the saga of Tamurkhan the Maggot Lord, lavishly illustrated and darkly detailed; an extensive bestiary section and a campaign system allowing you to fight the battles of Tamurkhan’s horde in games of Warhammer.
The book also contains The Legion of Azgorh, a fully playable Chaos Dwarf Army list, as well as rules for playing massive battles with forces drawn from all the different Chaos Army books.
Printed on high quality paper, which gives an amazing depth to the full colour artwork, each page is richly embellished with finely detailed illustrations. Full colour maps reveal never-before-seen vistas of the landscape and geography of the Warhammer world. The hardback, leather-effect binding, embossed with gold lettering, has been designed to emulate the faded binding of an arcane tome, down to the inclusion of the classic red silk-effect page marker.
Tamurkhan: Throne of Chaos will be on sale in limited numbers at Games Day UK, priced at £45. Forge World’s Book design team will be on hand throughout the day to autograph your copy, and explain how they put together this amazing book.

Relic Contemptor Dreadnought
Hot from the resin mines comes Simon Egan’s latest creation, the Relic Contemptor Dreadnought.
Given the rarity of the Contemptor-pattern chassis, it is not uncommon for those Chapters blessed enough to count these ancient war machines amongst their arsenal to embellish their armoured sarcophagus with scripture, honour scrolls and additional details to commemorate the heroism and indomitable valour of the Ancient enshrined within.
Fully compatible with the rest of our Contemptor weapons, the Relic Contemptor has been sculpted with a high level of detail, making the perfect painting project and a fantastic centrepiece to any Space Marine force. On sale in limited numbers from our Sales stand, the Relic Contemptor costs £32.

MkIc Deimos Pattern Rhino
The ubiquitous Rhino Armoured Personnel Carrier is a mainstay of the Space Marine Chapters, and has been in continuous use for ten thousand years. Its true origins are more distant still, and ancient records mention the RH1-N-0 Tracked Exploration and Multi-Purpose Defence Vehicle STC accompanying explorator missions during Mankind’s Golden Age. Re-armed and re-purposed for military use, the Rhino has remained a mainstay of the Imperium’s might over the millennia since.
There are many known patterns and designs of this robust vehicle, and the MkIc Deimos Pattern Rhino is among the oldest variants, first issued en-masse to the Astartes Legions of the Great Crusade. This pattern is armed with two turret-mounted bolters, slaved to the target-logis systems of the Rhino’s machine spirit rather than the more common pintle-mounted storm bolter seen on both the earlier MkIb Mars Pattern vehicle and the later MkIIc design that became more common after the Horus Heresy.
The MkIc Deimos Pattern Rhino, designed by Daren Parrwood, is a complete resin and plastic kit, containing a standard Games Workshop Rhino kit as well as sufficient resin conversion components to construct the MkIc Deimos Pattern variant. Priced at £33, this fantastic kit will be on sale in limited quantities at Games Day UK, well in advance of its general release date.

Thanks, Ead Brown, Customer Service Manager, Forge World

Wow is all I can say, I will definately be getting the Rhino now for my DW squad :D

I Shall Wear Midnight - Book Review

I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett
A man with no eyes. No eyes at all. Two tunnels in his head ...It's not easy being a witch, and it's certainly not all whizzing about on broomsticks, but Tiffany Aching - teen witch - is doing her best. Until something evil wakes up, something that stirs up all the old stories about nasty old witches, so that just wearing a pointy hat suddenly seems a very bad idea. Worse still, this evil ghost from the past is hunting down one witch in particular. He's hunting for Tiffany. Andhe's found her...A fabulous Discworld title filled with witches and magic and told in the inimitable Terry Pratchett style, "I Shall Wear Midnight" is the fourth Discworld title to feature Tiffany and her tiny, fightin', boozin' pictsie friends, the Nac Mac Feegle (aka The Wee Free Men).

This is the fourth, and apparently final, Tiffany Aching book from Terry Pratchett. It's brilliant - darker and more complex than the previous books, reflecting the fact that Tiffany is growing up, and the children who read Wee Free Men when it came out are growing with her. The Baron, Roland's father, is dying and Tiffany is taking his pain away. Roland has a new fiancee with a scary mother (with a secret of her own), and a secret of her own - and something is poisoning the people against witches - and only Tiffany can fight it.

As ever, the Feegles are helping her out in their own particular way, but even they seem to be more grown up than previously.

With the usual cameos from other Discworld stalwarts (this time including Carrot, Angua, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and, of course, Death - in a beautifully written death sequence), the extremely skilful use of locations - Tiffany and the Feegles in Ankh - and the unexpected reappearance of a VERY old character (or, rather, a character from one of the first Discworld books - to explain more would be to spoil the surprise) all come together to make I Shall Wear Midnight simply brilliant - and I love the title (It comes from Tiffanys statement in a previous book when she's asked why she doesn't wear black - "When I am older, I shall wear midnight" - the discovery that she's right about that is one of the cleverest bits of the book - but again, that would be telling...

Whichever version you choose, go out and buy it as it shows that despite all the turmoil Mr Pratchett can still write an amazing novel! A full on 5 stars from me.

Gamesday UK 2010 - More Forgeworld News and Upcoming Releases!

Well folks when it comes to information it seems that this year other than the Dark Eldar its Forgeworld thats the hot new! From Felix's Gaming blog we have some pictures from the seminar of the Badab war and also more rumours and pictures from the extended coverage of the Forgeworld seminar by Dio´Ra from Warseer. I wil endevour to pick out the important stuff for you all.

First up here are some of the pictures from Felix's Gaming Blog, please follow this link to see more details in his post and check out the rest of his blog.

#############################################

Anyway, here is extended coverage of the Forgeworld seminar by Dio´Ra from Warseer:

Hey all just returned from GD UK and my feet are killing me.

For the sake of some order I thought it would be a good thing to keep the FW news seperate from the other 40k news from GD. Anyway bullet points from the seminar:

Books for 2010/2011!
  • IA9 Badab war 1
  • IA10 Badab war 2
  • IA1 second edition (rules are updated only)
  • Model masterclass volume 2
  • IA11 Battle for Hoth! (Tony kept using the word Hoth, go blame him )
Okay lets start with some IA10 details:
  • Final battle
  • Big bad ass showdown between Culn and Huron
  • New space marine war machines
  • SM siege list
  • New rules for BFG
Space sharks are now named as the Carcharodons (the name change is final) and the chapter badge is not the final design yet, see picture below and are described as being kind of tribal now alla space wolves, but different tribal..I guess triba tattoos alla surfers.

The necron model was a one off model so don't expect morenecrons coming for the next two years.

IA11 details:
  • Eldar, space wolves, cadians and elysians
  • New eldar troop choices and two new aspects
  • Cadian will get hoth kind of upgrade kits, so think of the rebel soldiers on hoth or maybe the snowtroopers...Tony didn't mention which side of hoth troopers he meant
  • few elysian stuff, only because they didn't finish them on time during IA8 release
  • New space wolves, but don't expect thunderwolfs, as Tony said FW ain't here to fill out missing GW models in codexes but that they rather want to do new things, take it with a grain of salt maybe you SW will get a new Wolf lord on a wolf with a personal guard on wolves, who knows
  • Eldar, see pictures for new vehicles and one of the new aspect warriors, eldar will also get a char mayhaps, new war walker variants
  • Shadow spectres are equiped with jetpacks and have fire prism like weaponry.
Also Tony reacted very enthusiastic about pre heresy Dreadnoughts, when the question was asked if they are gonna make them.

Also while talking to Alan I got the following out of him:
  • Badab war part 2 this xmas out, as the book was written as one and was just too big to be onebig so they had to cut it in half
  • Sons of Medusa...we might get interesting fluff about their origin and also see hints of a future IA with Iron hands in the lead role, he told me he liked the IH because they are gonna be ver different than your standard marines...
  • The lynx is indeed armed with a pulsar and was described as being kind of a falcon without transport capacities and armed with a big gun...so not a super heavy, expect it to have stats from a falcon with a single pulsar.

Thanks to Dio'Ra at Warseer for this coverage.

#############################################

Some additional information now that I've managed to gather and sort out from other sources about the upcoming Imperial Armour 11 - Battle for Hoth:
  • Shadow spectres - have JETpacks rather than jump packs. Similar to Tau use. The wepon is a mini prism which would combine and be anti-vehicle. They are supposed to reflect the spirits of the dead in their appearance, hence the floating.
  • Hornet - twin linked. comes with resin pulsars but can use any of the normal heavy weapons. Pulsars will be expensive.
  • Cosairs - book puts some focus on raids by corsairs and rangers. Upgrade kit likely (helms, weapons etc).
  • Exodites - none in IA11. Left until a later date as would need large model set. (please not this is not confirmation just that its out there as a concept)
  • Jetseers - spoke to the guys about possibilty of an upgrade kit at some point. They said they hadn't really considered it but would look at it again as its an obvious hole in the range.
  • Eldar also getting fully enclosed war walkers (for the cold)
  • Cadians + Elysians to be involved (with cold weather upgrades as mentioned in my previous posts), Space wolves are the marines, concentrating on one Great Company. Likley to be One SW character and maybe a couple of Eldar.
  • General story of IA11 is a eldar colony world which 'put into storage' (deep freeze) and forgotten. Its then discovered by imperium during Great Crusade. There is a small eldar defending force that is destroyed by Space wolves. 10k years later the Eldar rediscover the webway portal to planet but then find that the defending force has been killed and replaced with guard/marines. Series of raids from corsairs/rangers etc before the big craftworld army attacks. Planet is of significant importance as they need to justify the use of the Phantom.
#############################################

Thats all for now folks! thanks to all those that went and gathered this information for the rest of us.
