The Emperor's Finest - Book Review

The Emperor's Finest by Sandy Mitchell
Commissar Cain is called to duty once more, saving a governor’s daughter from aplanet over-run by rebels. The uprising hides something far more sinister however – genestealer hybrids! The search for the source of the alien threat leads Cain to a drifting space hulk – a far safer place than beside the obsessed governor’s daughter. But when the Reclamator Space Marines suffer devastating losses at the hands of the Great Devourer, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone. With the tyranids waking and a group of stow away orks on the loose, there are no safe places to run or hide, and Cain must use all his ingenuity and cunning to escape the space hulk alive.

Just a brief review this time due to Christmas and other demands, so on with the show!

Cain is back doing what he does best, getting in to scrapes and blagging his way out of them again! Ok so the story arc could be epic and there could be a great sense of plot, but for some reason there doesn’t seem to be that! The novel just feels a little rushed and lots of the stories don’t interact very well. Though all is not lost, yes there is some pretty solid dialogue with the usual mix of self-depreciative humour, a touch of classic melodrama and this all works to keep the novel moving. I guess as well when you throw in that Cain is crossing paths with the Astartes you know that it’s going to have something for everyone. This, all in, saves the book and makes this a great title in the continuing series of the Imperium's greatest reasonably unmodified hero and one that will only add to his heroic saga.

There are however lots of sections in the book that are predictable and dry with everything that is going on seeming mundane and tedious but the odd Cain moment changes it up. There are a few nice nods to current fiction characters and current trends, however the footnotes are a great disappointment! Normally they are a great humorous touch to the books but in this case they just don’t add to the appeal and are almost completely pointless, still it’s nice to see their still there.

Unfortunately because of a few let downs the book only scores a 4 out of 5 from me but given its a Cain book and the character is great fun I personally can’t wait for the next one to see how things improve.

===============================================

Hi There,
Merry Christmas from all at Forge World! In today’s newsletter we can announce that the next Imperial Armour book is available to pre-order! We also have the third and final part of our Designer Interview for your viewing pleasure, and details of our opening hours over the Festive period.
Thanks,
Ead Brown

Imperial Armour Volume 10: The Badab War Part II Available to Pre-Order

After mercilessly teasing you with our preview gallery and designer interview videos over the past few days, we are proud to announce that Imperial Armour Volume 10: The Badab War Part II is available to pre-order now. It will be despatched immediately after the Christmas period in the week commencing the 4th of January 2011.

This lavish 208-page tome is the second volume in Forge World’s exploration of the infamous Badab War, and for the first time the apocalyptic conclusion to this most bloody conflict is laid bare and the true price the Imperium pays to dethrone the Tyrant it has created is revealed.

In addition to full background histories of nine of the Chapters that played a significant part in the later stages of the war, this book also contains a full Space Marine Siege Assault Vanguard army list, a new siege special mission for use with the Badab War campaign system presented in Imperial Armour Volume 9, three new Apocalypse formations and new ships and fleet lists for Battlefleet Gothic games. Forge World’s book production team have also done sterling work adding yet more depth to the Warhammer 40,000 universe in the form of a phenomenal range of colour profiles, star maps and colour photographs.

As usual, the first 500 copies will be signed by the writer, Alan Bligh, and Imperial Armour Volume 10 is supplied in a unique slipcase with space for your copy of Imperial Armour Volume 9. It also comes complete with the biggest poster we’ve ever released! Measuring a massive 841mm by 1189mm, this double-sided poster details every single Chapter involved in the Badab War, while the reverse side features a magnificent Navigator’s artefact map created by Sam Lamont. Click here to see how big this poster is. You can also pre-order the Badab War Part II Poster separately, rolled in a sturdy tube.
If this wasn’t enough we have put together an exclusive online-only offer, The Complete Badab War, containing both Part I and Part II of these Imperial Armour books as well as both the Badab War posters packed within the slip case. The poster and book bundle will both be despatched in the week commencing the 4th of January 2011.

Badab Interview Video Part 3
We won’t keep you waiting any longer so without further ado we can proudly present part 3 of our interview with Simon Egan and Alan Bligh.
Spoiler Warning! If you don't already know the outcome of the Badab War, we'd recommend pausing before the final question. If you’ve got any questions, comments or suggestions for future interviews, please get in touch at Forgeworld@games-workshop.co.uk.

===============================================

As I am pretty sure you can guess my order for the book is in already and I now have to OK it with the Mrs if I can get a spare copy of the poster for the office/hobby room/library/my pit!
Certainly looks interesting and cant wait to get my hands on it and get to see the new toys for marines (and hopefully Guard in the form of Boarding parties) in 2011!

IA:10 is certainly shaping up to be a corker, time to keep an eye out for pre-orders I think!

Imperial Guard Army List - 500 Armoured Variations!

After playing with the Valkyrie 500's I thought it a good idea to organise some other 500 point lists for games and days when the Valkyries would not be practical (and from a costings point of veiw these are cheaper price wise) and have come up with the following lists.
Please have a look and feel free to give me any feedback you have for them.

Rapid Response 500
This is my first attempt at a response and patrol force using the 500 point limit. My thoughts were to offer a scouting element with the Sentinal, a Support element in the form of the Griffon and Rapid Response units in the form of the Chimera Squads.

Rapid Response 500 MK2
The second attempt at a response and patrol force is similar in its make up but drops the Sentinal and gains Meltas in the squads. It maintains a Support element in the form of the Griffon and Rapid Response units in the form of the Chimera Squads.

Rapid Response 500 MK3
The third attempt drops the extra and provides a Chimera based force with no extras but lots of assorted weapons.

Thinking about these lists I am very tempted to swap the turret weapons and the hull weapon for flamers on the command squad for a bit more anti-personal.

Next we have my mini armoured coloumn forces:

Armoured Coloumn 500

This is a bear bones list with no extras in the squads

Armoured Coloumn 500 MK2
This list alters the Russ and adds some punch with the launchers in the squads. There with these lists of course is the option to change the hull and turret weapons on the chimeras.

So folks, thoughts and feedback as alternative lists? I've a feeling I'll end up using one of these first

Imperial Guard Army List - Valkyrie 500 Variations!

Ok so for some insane reason yes I've decided my reintroduction to playing 40k will involve Valkyries, as some of you have already seen or commented on my lists from the other day I thought I would share with you the thing that drew me back to the Valkyrie after I tried to be "saner", I give you "The" image:

Uknown artists image of mega-firey-shootie-winged death!
Ok folks based in thar thinking and the ideas of some of the folks on here time for a few of the Valk 500 variations, all collected to tidy things up:

VERSION 1
  • Psyker – 70
  • vet squad – 85 (3 flamers)
  • vet squad – 100 (3 meltas)
  • Valk – 100 (no upgrades)
  • Valk with rocket pods or vendetta – 130
Total = 485 that Leaves me 15 points for HB on one of the valks (possibly the basic one to make it more useful) and a few points to buy the sergs some bolt pistols or something.

VERSION 2
  • Psyker – 70
  • vet squad – 100 (3 meltas)
  • vet squad – 100 (3 meltas)
  • Valk – 100 (no upgrades)
  • Valk with rocket pods or vendetta - 130 (no upgrades)
Total = 500 on the nose

VERSION 3
  • Psyker – 70
  • Vet squad – 95 (2 meltas and 1 flamer)
  • Vet squad – 95 (2 meltas and 1 flamer)
  • Valk – 110 (basic Valk with heavy bolters)
  • Valk with rocket pods or vendetta – 130 (no upgrades)
Total = 500 on the nose

VERSION 4
  • Psyker – 70
  • Vet squad – 90 (2 meltas)
  • Vet squad – 90 (2 meltas)
  • Valk with heavy bolters – 110
  • Valk with rocket pods or vendetta either with heavy bolters – 140
Total = 500 on the nose

VERSION 5

  • Psyker – 70
  • vet squad – 80 (2 flamers)
  • vet squad – 90 (2 meltas)
  • Valk with Rocket Pods or Vendetta- 130
  • Valk with rocket pods or vendetta – 130
Total = 500 on the nose

I’ve included the alternate option in all the lists for the rocket pod Valk to be replaced with a vendetta then that way depending on the force can choose between rockets or las depending on armour facing me. Although that does beg the question how easy is it to magnatise the weapons on them?

So any thoughts or suggestions?

Keep an eye out for my other options of armour and troop based lists coming soon (hopefully)

Imperial Guard Army List - First 500pt attempt

After visiting my local store and a few folks at work mentioning it I thought it might be a good idea to get a force together as something to work towards and also as something to help me relearn the rules.

The force is designed as an initial starting point - though obviously if its that bad I'm sure I could start afresh - as something to buy some models for and build up. Its also my first proper foray in to list building and could be the road to disaster.

so without further ado here is my first all rounder list:

Please click on the image to open up full size.
As you can see its a bit of an Air Cav force designed as a bit of an all comers killer. I fancy playing this in the local store in their 500pt pick up tourney as well as against some of my mates.
I know the force may be a bit extravagant so any suggestions on alternatives or changes would be great. I intend to be taking on any force but the most common forces I am expecting are Space Marines, Tau, Eldar and Kroot. Any suggestions on building a good guard list would be great.

Thanks and feel free to feed back.

Friday 5 Finds - 17.12.10

Hello again folks,
Back again so soon, after all my excitement I thought I better get on and get these up before I loose momentum so here are this weeks Five Finds:
  1. JP over on the Artic Templars Blog has created an awesome and intimidating looking Furioso Librarian Dreadnought that is well worth checking out here.
  2. Next more updates on Les Bursley's spectacular Astorath WIP are up on Awesome Paint job, a must for any painting fan.
  3. Black Matt over at his Black Legion Blog has a superb set of pics on his freehand painted Blood Angels Death Company Rhino/Razorback - the freehand on the RB is subtle but its there if you look.
  4. b.smoove on A Gentleman's Ones has a great recipe and tutorial for painting black on large expanses of cloth.
  5. Finally SC Mike has a frugal and unique take on creating your own Banewolf, an interesting and fun conversion using wholly recycled parts.
Last but not least here is this weeks Five Finds Sneak Peek:

Hobby News - Exciting Delivers & Hobby Area news!

Well folks today's Friday Five Finds has unfortunately had a delay until later today due to a large number of arrivals late yesterday and earlier this morning.

Due to the bad weather I've had to wait sometime for the bits and pieces that have arrived but as far as I'm concerned it is worth the wait, so when you see everything that smashed through my door in the past 24 hours I'm sure you'll understand why. This is what has touched down at Maison Millest:

As you can see a fair old haul that was nice to receive as one lot, in there we have the Ultramarine movie, which I will no doubt be watching tonight, the Marine Codex, My next novel on the list The Emperors Finest and finally some Brass Etch from Forgeworld. Two lots of Inquisition Icons and a sheet of small Imperial Eagles for use on the Guard.

This arrival of many items linked with some small back part of my brain nagging at me has spurred me to spend the day organising a hobby area and getting it all set up so I can make the best use of the desk, so with out further ado may I present the forge:

As you can see pretty much everything I will need is now within arms reach, well apart from the beer and a fridge, but this looks like it will suffice. I know this isn't a comprehensive set up by any stretch of the imagination but it seems to work for the bits I have worked on this afternoon.

So folks a very busy day in the Maison and for once I've actually enjoyed some hard work.

Blog News
Finally a bit of a Blog question for all you readers, as some of you may have noticed recently there have been one or two non-warhammer 40,000 titles slipping in to the "Currently Reading" icon on the left of the blog. I was wondering if people would like the reviews I write for these posting on the blog or if you prefer me to stick to just Black Library titles.
Please feel free to feedback your thoughts on this subject.

Thanks and Enjoy

Forge World Newsletter #258 - Christmas Jigsaw Reveal & Interview update!

Apologies it is a little later than usual but I can definitely say if you have seen this so far on the t'interwebs then your definitely in for a treat! Enjoy:

===============================================

Hello,

In this week’s Newsletter we bring you the final piece of our festive jigsaw puzzle, an update on the Badab designers’ interview and a reminder that there is still time to place an order for Christmas.
Thanks,
Stephen Green

Forge World Christmas Jigsaw Part 3
After much speculation and excitement, we can at last reveal the full glory of the Malcador Infernus which you will be able to add to your Imperial ranks in the New Year!

Badab War Designers interview
A few months ago we gave you the opportunity to pitch your questions to the writer of the Badab War books, Alan Bligh and the designer of many of the models that feature within, Simon Egan.
We had a fantastic response so we’d like to say thank you to all those who sent their questions to us, and we can now announce that the interview has been filmed and will be available for you to view on the Forge World site early next year.

===============================================

Certainly looks mean enough, though something inside me cant help but scream "Very expensive Overkill!!!!" now I know there is no such thing as overkill but this thing almost has the look of a titan killer rather than something you would roll out against ground troops. Still I'm sure eventually I might end up with one for Apocalypse games!

so thoughts? Is this the latest Marmite tank from FW? (if any of our overseas readers don't get this let me know and I'll explain in the comments :) ) time to discuss in the comments section.

All your Base are belong to........... us? Part the second!

After asking the question and sticking up a poll to judge the mood and thoughts of those reading I thought this wouldn't get much action, oh boy was I wrong! not only in a few days did the poll get the most votes so far on any poll, but also the comments on the post were the most ever received, so a massive thanks to all those that contributed and commented.

After a rather decisive winner in the voting and some rather insightful posting in the comments section of the post from a few folks (albeit slightly biased but we can forgive that) I am happy to announce a clear winner, consensus or collective drooling - call it what you will. The results were:

As you can clearly see the winner by a Suffolk mile (bit like a country mile but with more cider!) are the Secret Weapons Bases. Personally after all the useful info Mr Justin provided in the comments sections, the recommendations he got and my own personal preference I am glad they won. For those of you still curious as to which bases these are here's another picture:

As you can see a good range, nice detail and looking at those pictures some pretty good casting. I will hopefully get an order in once the New Year has rocked up, but for those of you that are interested the bases can be bought from Mr Justin here:

Once I pick the bases up I intend to get some of the other exceptional bits and pieces, such as the bolter shells just for the hell of it. Once its available I fancy some of the Roman Numeral brass etch too, depending on the size. So once ordered and arrived expect a product review on those SWM items.

Also just so the fans of the other bases aren't too upset don't worry as I intend to use the other bases in a number of other smaller projects to tie them together with a coherent theme.

As always thoughts and comments welcome!

Firedrake - Book Review

Firedrake by Nick Kyme
When Chaplain Elysius of the Salamanders is taken captive by Dark Eldar, he faces a fight for survival at the hands of these cruel aliens. The Firedrakes of 1st Company attempt a daring rescue mission, but much more is at stake than the Chaplain’s life. He holds the key to secrets buried beneath Mount Deathfire, secrets that could reveal the damnation – or salvation – of their home world. The Salamanders must penetrate the Port of Anguish and defeat the xenos threat there if they are to unveil the mysteries within the Tome of Fire. Meanwhile, Dak’ir battles to survive the brutal Librarian training, and in his visions liesan even darker future…

CAUTION CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!

The latest novel by Nick Kyme, Firedrake, is Book 2 in the Tome Of Fire Trilogy. The Tome Of Fire Trilogy focuses on the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter as the secrets of the chapter could reveal the damnation, or salvation, of their home world, Nocturne. It also examines the fall of their heroes and how marines can be turned. The novels main characters and protagonists are the same as the previous book in the trilogy, and will no doubt be the same as the next novel. It’s nice to see that in this novel some of the more peripheral characters, such as Chaplain Elysius and Librarian Pyriel have more significant roles. New portions of the background and makeup of the chapter are revealed in the form of characters such as Forgefather Vulkan He'stan and his quest for the nine – no we’re not talking BSG style here!

The novel is extremely well written and the novel helps continue some excellent character development that really brings the Salamanders Chapter and their aggressors, both internal and xenos, to life. The plot of the novel, with its two intertwining stories, is also fantastic with some storylines from the first novel in The Tome Of Fire Trilogy concluding, others continue to be developed and new storylines are introduced. The problem is the intertwining story lines are often confusing and take some getting in too, their just seems too much meandering to make sense some times.

Overall, this is a solid but slightly slow novel that progresses the Tome Of Fire Trilogy well and helps develop the chapter, the Dark Eldar and looks at other aspects of other chapters and facets of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I found that it was a good read to get more information but overall not as good as the first novel in the series, I guess it succumbs to the second book curse, but I can imagine the third book will end this well and pick up the pace.

Overall a good read but just down to its mixed up nature I am afraid it’s only a 3 star rating from me. Sorry Nick.

Well folks there you have it, part two of what is quite obviously a Valdor variant, I've spliced a crude pic together to give the overall impression here:

looks quite interesting, wouldn't mind one but I'm sure there are lots more new goodies over the next year (who knows i might get those Cadian Taros crews I've been wanting) and this is a very very good start.

let me know what you think.

All your Base are belong to........... us?

Well folks after a few days trawling the web since I was originally given the links I have narrowed the choice of bases for the city fight based guard to the two selections show below.
I was wondering if anyone had experience of the two companies and what peoples preferences were towards the quality and style of the bases. so far I have found the following options:

Dragon Forge Concrete rubble bases:
FOUND HERE

Secret Weapon Miniatures Urban bases:
FOUND HERE
Any ideas, comments, reviews or other comments would be appreciated. Cost wise the two work out very similar in price but the Dragon Forge bases seem to have a slightly larger range.

Obviously once they were received each base would have minor conversion detail like extra rubble, soil, bricks, weapons and body parts added on. When trying to decide on a theme I was considering just sticking with one range but would a mixture of the two work?

Any thoughts and ideas would be great, also feel free to vote in my short poll on the side for which is your preference.

Thanks
